National Sports Recap: CITY Builds Momentum, Team USA Dominates, and Summer Sports Heat Up

Cardinals Search for Answers After the All-Star Break
The second half of the season hasn’t gone the way the Cardinals were hoping. Coming out of the All-Star break, St. Louis headed to Arizona looking to build some momentum against the Diamondbacks. The series started on a high note with a thrilling 5-4 victory, but the momentum quickly disappeared as Arizona claimed the next two games, winning 5-3 and 8-7. The Cardinals showed flashes of offensive production, but pitching struggles once again made the difference.
Things didn’t get much easier in Anaheim against the Angels. The Cardinals dropped the first two games of the series, falling 3-2 and 5-1. They did manage to avoid the sweep with a pitcher’s duel, edging the Angels 1-0 in the finale. That victory showed just how good this team can be when the pitching staff does its job and the offense comes through with timely hitting.
Returning home didn’t provide much relief. The Cardinals hosted Arizona for a rare one-game series, but the Diamondbacks continued to have the upper hand, winning 10-6. Defensive mistakes and inconsistent pitching once again proved costly.
The weekend series against division rival Cincinnati offered another opportunity to turn things around. The Cardinals dropped the opener 4-2 before responding with arguably their most complete performance of the stretch. A dominant 7-0 shutout victory showcased excellent pitching, solid defense, and an offense that finally clicked together. Unfortunately, they couldn’t carry that momentum into the finale, falling 5-3 and losing another series.
As if things weren’t difficult enough, the Cubs came to town for one of baseball’s greatest rivalries. Through the first two games of the four-game series, Chicago has controlled the matchup, winning 7-3 before delivering a 10-2 rout. With two games still remaining, the Cardinals desperately need to find some consistency on both sides of the ball.
Right now, everything needs to improve. The pitching staff has struggled to hold leads, defensive mistakes have extended innings, and the offense hasn’t consistently produced enough runs to overcome those issues. When all three phases come together, the Cardinals have shown they can compete with anyone. The problem has been putting together complete games on a regular basis.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier. After finishing the Cubs series, the Cardinals head north to face the defending American League champion Toronto Blue Jays before traveling to New York for a showdown with one of baseball’s most historic franchises, the Yankees. Those two series will be another big test as St. Louis looks to get back on track.
St. Louis CITY SC Finds Its Rhythm
While the Cardinals have struggled to find consistency, St. Louis CITY SC has done the exact opposite.
CITY continues to play some of its best soccer of the season, extending an impressive winning streak with victories over the LA Galaxy and the Colorado Rapids. The 3-1 road win over the Galaxy showcased an explosive attack, while the 1-0 victory over Colorado highlighted the club’s defensive discipline and ability to grind out results.
Confidence continues to grow with every match, and suddenly CITY has become one of the hotter teams in MLS. They’ll look to keep the momentum rolling when they host Real Salt Lake before taking a break for the annual Leagues Cup.
If you’re wondering why there’s another pause after the lengthy FIFA Club World Cup break, it’s because MLS temporarily stops league play so clubs can compete in the Leagues Cup, the tournament featuring teams from MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX. Once the tournament concludes, regular MLS action resumes.
Barcelona Opens Preseason with a Statement
The defending La Liga champions are back, and they wasted little time reminding everyone why they’re among Europe’s elite.
Barcelona opened preseason with a convincing 4-1 victory over fellow Spanish club CE Europa. Even though it was only a friendly, the match showed plenty of positive signs as Barcelona controlled possession, created scoring chances, and looked sharp throughout the game.
More preseason tests are still to come, beginning with a matchup against English side Birmingham. These friendlies will help the squad build chemistry and fitness before the new campaign officially begins.
Kansas City Current Looks to Bounce Back
The Current were unable to build momentum, falling 1-0 on the road against the Boston Legacy.
It wasn’t the result Kansas City wanted, but there’s little time to dwell on the loss. They’ll return home looking to bounce back against Racing Louisville. With plenty of talent throughout the squad, the Current are more than capable of responding with a strong performance.
Manchester City Prepares for a New Era
Manchester City is almost back.
The Premier League giants are preparing for another season with a preseason tour in Asia. Their schedule features three excellent tests against quality competition.
City opens the tour against Italian powerhouse Inter Milan before taking on the K League All-Stars in South Korea. They’ll wrap up the tour with a matchup against Spanish powerhouse Atlético Madrid.
These friendlies are about much more than results. They’ll allow Enzo Maresca, the new manager, to evaluate his squad, give younger players valuable experience, and help everyone regain match fitness before another demanding season begins.
Team USA Women’s Baseball Dominates Group Play
The United States Women’s National Baseball Team could not have asked for a better start to the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup.
Team USA dominated every opponent in group play, opening with a commanding 22-2 victory over South Korea before defeating Mexico 24-5. The offense stayed red-hot with a 10-5 win over Australia, followed by a 12-0 shutout of Canada. The Americans wrapped up an incredible week by overwhelming Hong Kong 34-0 to finish group play undefeated.
Some fans may wonder why the Women’s Baseball World Cup is split between two different years. The WBSC now uses a two-stage format. Group play takes place first, allowing nations from around the world to compete for a place in the finals. The championship round is then held the following year, giving the qualified teams time to prepare while allowing the WBSC to build anticipation for the medal round.
This year’s group stage took place in Rockford, Illinois, a city with deep roots in women’s baseball history. Rockford was home to the Rockford Peaches, one of the original teams in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League made famous by A League of Their Own. Hosting the tournament there serves as a fitting tribute to generations of women who helped grow the game.
International Softball Comes to Oklahoma City
The summer of international competition continues with another major event taking place on American soil as the USA Softball International Cup comes to Oklahoma City from July 30 through August 3.
The tournament brings together eight national teams from around the world for several days of high-level competition at one of softball's most iconic venues. While it isn't the Women's Softball World Cup or the Olympics, the International Cup gives countries a valuable opportunity to evaluate talent, build chemistry, and prepare for future international championships.
The United States is represented by the Women's Elite Team, essentially the final step below the Senior Women's National Team. The roster features many of the nation's top up-and-coming players who are looking to prove they belong on the sport's biggest stage.
Team USA faces a challenging road in Group A alongside world No. 1 Japan, Chinese Taipei, and American Samoa. Group B features Canada, China, Australia, and the U.S. senior women’s national team, creating several intriguing matchups throughout the tournament.
With Oklahoma City serving as the home of USA Softball and the Women's College World Series, there's no better place to showcase some of the best international softball talent in the world. It should be another exciting week for fans as the next generation of stars gets an opportunity to represent their countries.
U.S. Men Advance in Volleyball Nations League
The United States wrapped up Volleyball Nations League pool play with some impressive victories.
The Americans swept China before pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating volleyball powerhouse Brazil in straight sets. Although the final two matches resulted in losses to Bulgaria and Poland, Team USA had already done enough to punch its ticket to the quarterfinals.
Now comes perhaps the toughest challenge yet as the Americans prepare to face Italy in the knockout stage. If they can recapture the level they showed against Brazil, they’ll have every chance to continue their tournament run.
U.S. Women Complete Another Strong VNL Run
The U.S. women once again proved they’re among the world’s best by advancing to the Volleyball Nations League quarterfinals.
Their tournament came to an end with a 3-1 loss to China, but reaching the knockout stage is still another strong performance for one of the sport’s premier national teams.
Congratulations are also in order for Turkey, who captured the Women’s Volleyball Nations League championship with an impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil. Brazil earned the silver medal, while Italy claimed bronze after defeating China.
American Tennis Stars Find Success in Washington
The hard-court season is underway, and two of America’s top stars are off to strong starts in Washington.
Taylor Fritz has looked sharp, opening the tournament with back-to-back straight-set victories. He first defeated Belgium’s Zizou Bergs before following it up with another convincing win over Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak. Fritz continues to look comfortable as he prepares for the upcoming U.S. Open swing.
Ben Shelton has also enjoyed success in singles. He opened his tournament with a three-set victory over fellow American Martin Damm and now moves on to face France’s Ugo Humbert.
Shelton also competed in doubles alongside Ecuador’s Diego Hidalgo. Although they battled hard, the duo fell in three sets to American Christian Harrison and Great Britain’s Neal Skupski. Even with the doubles exit, Shelton remains alive in singles and will look to continue his strong run.
August Promises More Storylines
As July comes to a close, there’s still plenty to watch across the sports world. The Cardinals are searching for consistency, CITY is riding a wave of confidence, European soccer giants are preparing for another season, Team USA continues to make noise on the international stage, and tennis is heating up as the summer hard-court season rolls on. August promises to bring even more exciting storylines.
