National Sports Recap: Rivalry Wins, Summer League Battles, and the Road Ahead

From the NWSL and MLS to Major League Baseball, the NBA Summer League, and beach volleyball, another busy week brought dramatic finishes, tough lessons, and plenty to watch as summer sports continue.

The second half of the summer sports season is underway, and teams across the country are looking to build momentum. Some clubs returned from league breaks with statement performances, while others continue searching for consistency as postseason races begin to take shape.

Kansas City Current Continue Searching for Momentum

The Current’s return from the NWSL break has been anything but easy.

Kansas City opened the week with a difficult trip to Orlando, where the defending champions showed why they’re one of the league’s elite teams. The Pride controlled the match from the opening whistle, handing the Current a 3-0 defeat. Kansas City struggled to create consistent scoring opportunities while Orlando capitalized on its chances and never let the visitors find any momentum.

Back at CPKC Stadium, the Current looked much more like themselves against the San Diego Wave. After falling behind, Kansas City battled back twice to earn a 2-2 draw in an entertaining match that featured end-to-end action for the full 90 minutes. While it wasn’t the three points the club wanted, the resilience shown after the Orlando loss was an encouraging sign.

Defensively, there are still improvements to be made. Conceding five goals over two matches isn’t the standard Kansas City expects, but earning a point against a talented San Diego side could help rebuild confidence as the season continues.

St. Louis City Restarts with a Rivalry Victory

St. Louis City couldn’t have scripted a much better return.

After the MLS break, City welcomed Sporting Kansas City for another chapter in one of the league’s newest rivalries, and the fans at Energizer Park were treated to plenty of drama.

St. Louis came away with a thrilling 3-2 victory, continuing their success against Sporting KC. The attack looked aggressive, the energy was back, and City found ways to finish chances when it mattered most. Rivalry matches are rarely comfortable, and this one was no exception, but St. Louis did enough to secure all three points.

The win also provides momentum heading into an important stretch. Next up is a road trip to face the LA Galaxy before returning home to wrap up July against the Colorado Rapids. If City can carry the same attacking mindset into those matches, they’ll have a chance to build on an impressive restart.

Cardinals Look for Consistency After the All-Star Break

Baseball returned after the All-Star break, and the Cardinals looked ready to make a statement.

St. Louis opened its series against Arizona with a hard-fought 5-4 victory. The offense produced timely hits, and the bullpen did just enough to lock down the win.

Unfortunately, that momentum didn’t last.

The Diamondbacks answered by taking the next two games, winning 5-3 before edging the Cardinals 8-7 in one of the most entertaining games of the series. Sunday’s finale turned into an offensive battle, but despite scoring seven runs, St. Louis couldn’t come up with the big stop late in the game.

Giving up 18 runs over the final two contests proved costly. The offense showed flashes of what it’s capable of, but pitching struggles ultimately made the difference as Arizona left St. Louis with the series victory.

With the season entering its most important stretch, every series matters. The Cardinals have shown they can compete offensively, but finding more consistency on the mound will be critical if they want to stay in the postseason conversation.

American League Dominates the All-Star Game

This year’s MLB All-Star Game belonged to the American League.

The AL pitching staff completely shut down the National League lineup in a convincing 4-0 victory. From the starting pitcher through the bullpen, the American League never allowed the National League’s star-studded offense to establish any rhythm.

Offensively, the AL did enough early and added insurance late, making the game feel comfortable throughout the evening. While fans always enjoy seeing baseball’s biggest stars share the field, this year’s Midsummer Classic lacked the late-game drama that has made some recent All-Star Games memorable.

Pacers Gain Valuable Summer League Experience

The Pacers’ Summer League hasn’t produced many wins, but it has certainly produced plenty of close games.

Indiana earned an exciting 94-93 victory over Cleveland thanks to strong late-game execution, but the following three games all slipped away.

The Pacers fell 100-93 in overtime to Philadelphia after forcing an extra period, then suffered back-to-back one-point losses: 94-93 against Toronto and another close battle before falling 114-98 to Minnesota to close out Summer League play.

Losing three games in a row is frustrating, especially when two came by just a single point. At the same time, Summer League is more about development than wins and losses. Indiana’s young players gained valuable experience in close-game situations, something that could pay off when training camp begins.

Elite 16 Beach Volleyball Heads to Rio

Some of the world’s best beach volleyball players are headed to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the Elite 16 tournament will take place from July 29 through August 2.

The Elite 16 represents one of the premier events on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, bringing together many of the top-ranked pairs in the world to compete for gold on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

The United States will be well represented on the men’s side with Gaige Basey and Thomas Hurst, Trevor Crabb and Chase Budinger, Myles Partain and James Shaw, and Cody Caldwell and Jacob La Bouliere.

The women’s field is equally impressive. Team USA will be represented by Tegan Van Gunst and Piper Ferch, Hailey Harward and Xolani Hodel, Julia Donlin and Devon Newberry, Madelyne Anderson and Alaina Chacon, Molly Shaw and Molly Phillips, Sara Hughes and Ally Batenhorst, and Abby Van Winkle and Torrey Van Winden.

With Olympic-level talent spread throughout the draw, every match will matter. Rio has produced unforgettable beach volleyball moments over the years, and another exciting chapter is ready to unfold as the world’s best pairs battle for another Elite 16 title.
