Week of April 10th-recap
Barcelona once again showed why they’re one of the most complete clubs in Europe right now.
On the men’s side, they pulled off a tough 2–1 road win at Atlético Madrid, taking a huge step toward another La Liga title. Atlético struck first through Giuliano Simeone, but Marcus Rashford quickly leveled. With Atlético down to ten men, Robert Lewandowski popped up in the 88th minute to chest home the winner and send Barça seven points clear at the top—a late, dramatic moment that perfectly captured Barca’s resilience this season.
The women’s team was even more dominant. They absolutely thrashed Badalona 6–0, with Barcelona’s elite attack and multiple scorers finding the back of the net in a comprehensive performance. This result highlights just how deep and dangerous this Barcelona squad is on the offensive end.
On the men’s side in Europe, Barcelona fell 2–0 to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, struggling to generate consistent chances and finishing with limited shots on target. However, they bounced back, thrashing Espanyol 4–1 with an elite attack and multiple goal scorers leading the way.
Following the match against Atlético, the club also filed a complaint to UEFA over a disallowed penalty decision.
Manchester City’s FA Cup nights were amazing for both squads.
The men’s team completely thrashed Liverpool FC 4–0 at the Etihad in the quarter-final, with Erling Haaland grabbing a hat-trick, including a penalty and two more incredible finishes. Antoine Semenyo slotted home the third. Haaland’s performance was as incredible as ever, and that result booked City a spot in the semi-finals and marked their eighth straight FA Cup semis under Guardiola’s watch.
On the women’s side, City’s FA Cup journey continues as well after they edged past Birmingham City 1–0 thanks to a goal from Khadija Shaw. It was a tighter game than the men’s rout, but a clean sheet and another advancement highlight City’s depth and competitiveness across both sides.
City also added another strong result, beating Chelsea 3–0 with a dominant attacking performance and control throughout the match, continuing their impressive run of form.
St. Louis City came very close to losing on the road against New York City FC, but the late drama went their way.
NYCFC opened the scoring around the 50th minute through Hannes Wolf, and City trailed for most of the second half. Then, miraculously, City almost lost before Brendan McSorley scored a late equalizer deep in stoppage time to rescue a 1–1 draw.
It was the kind of game where there was a mix of “so close to a loss” and “heroic last-gasp goal” that makes the MLS so compelling, and it kept City’s momentum alive.
They followed that up with another 1–1 draw against FC Dallas, once again relying on resilience and late-game composure to grind out a result in a tightly contested match.
The St. Louis Blues are heating up at just the right time in the NHL playoff push.
In Anaheim, St. Louis pulled off a commanding 6–2 victory over the Ducks, with Robert Thomas leading the charge with a goal and three points, while Dylan Holloway added two power-play goals in a strong offensive showing.
On the road against the Colorado Avalanche, Thomas delivered a signature performance, recording his first career hat trick and scoring the game-winner late in the third period in a 3–2 win.
However, the Blues then dropped back-to-back games, falling 3–1 to the Avalanche and 3–2 to the Winnipeg Jets, both tightly contested matchups where they couldn’t find the late equalizer.
They did respond with a 5–3 win over their biggest rivals, the Chicago Blackhawks, with a strong offensive effort, but despite the flashes, they will unfortunately miss the playoffs this season.
It was a rough road trip for the St. Louis Cardinals.
In Detroit, they dropped the first game 4–0, unable to solve Tigers starter Framber Valdez in a tough outing. Then came an 11–6 loss as Detroit had a strong hitting performance, pacing the Tigers’ offense and making it a long night for St. Louis.
Before that, the team showed some fight in the series finale, avoiding the sweep with a 5–3 win. Kyle Leahy threw quality innings, while Iván Herrera delivered key RBIs in a pivotal four-run fifth that turned things around.
After that, St. Louis took a tough loss in Washington, falling 9–6 as the Washington Nationals rallied with a big middle inning powered by home runs from James Wood, Brady House, and CJ Abrams.
The Cardinals did respond by taking the series over Washington with 7–6 and 6–1 wins, showing improved offense and timely hitting.
They then opened a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox with a 3–2 win behind strong pitching, but were overwhelmed 7–1 in Game 2 as the offense struggled to produce and the pitching staff gave up early runs. In the series finale, the struggles continued as they were beaten 9–3, with the Red Sox jumping ahead early and never looking back to take the series.
