National Sports Recap: World Cup Drama, Wimbledon Begins, and Summer Sports Heat Up
From the Cardinals' search for consistency to Volleyball Nations League, field hockey, Wimbledon, and the FIFA World Cup, here's a look at the biggest stories from around the sports world.
Summer sports are in full swing, and there was no shortage of headlines this week. Teams battled for playoff positioning, international tournaments intensified, and one of tennis' biggest championships got underway. Here's a look at the biggest moments from across the sports landscape.
Kansas City Current Return to Action
The wait is finally over. The Kansas City Current returned to action after nearly a month away from competition, but the comeback wasn't the one they were hoping for.
Kansas City opened the second half of its season with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Gotham in the NWSL Challenge Cup. Gotham controlled much of the match with organized defending and timely finishing, while the Current struggled to consistently generate dangerous scoring chances despite seeing plenty of possession.
Fortunately for Kansas City, the Challenge Cup is now behind them. The focus immediately shifts back to the NWSL regular season, where every point counts in what continues to be one of the league's most competitive playoff races. With stars leading the attack and one of the league's most explosive offenses, the Current will look to quickly shake off the nerves and rediscover the form that made them one of the favorites earlier this season.
Cardinals Continue Searching for Consistency
It was another frustrating stretch for the St. Louis Cardinals, who continue searching for consistency in an up-and-down season.
The Cardinals opened a three-game home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks with an exciting 3-2 victory. Strong starting pitching kept Arizona's offense in check, while timely hitting in the late innings proved to be the difference.
Unfortunately, St. Louis couldn't build on that momentum. The Diamondbacks rallied for a 4-3 victory in Game 2 before pulling away for a convincing 9-4 win in the finale. Defensive mistakes and missed opportunities with runners on base once again proved costly.
Things didn't get much easier against the Miami Marlins. The Cardinals were shut out 4-0 in the opener before dropping Game 2 by a 5-1 score as Miami's pitching staff kept the lineup quiet. St. Louis finally salvaged the series with a gritty 2-1 win behind another outstanding pitching performance, while the second game of the series was postponed because of severe weather and will be made up later in the season.
Now the challenge only gets tougher. The Cardinals travel to Atlanta to face a dangerous Braves lineup before renewing one of baseball's greatest rivalries against the Chicago Cubs. After that comes an unusual five-game home series against the Milwaukee Brewers that includes a doubleheader. That stretch will put tremendous pressure on the starting rotation, bullpen, and overall roster depth as the Cardinals look to stay in the postseason race.
U.S. Men's Field Hockey Faces Tough Competition
The U.S. men's field hockey team experienced a difficult week at the 2026 FIH Nations Cup.
Facing some of the world's strongest programs, the Americans were unable to earn a victory but gained valuable experience against elite international competition.
The United States now prepares for three friendly matches against Canada, where another chapter in the North American rivalry awaits.
U.S. Women Build Momentum
The U.S. women's field hockey team enjoyed a much more successful tournament and continues building confidence ahead of the Women's World Cup.
After opening with a narrow loss to India, the Americans responded with impressive victories over Uruguay, Japan, and Chile before narrowly falling to New Zealand in a penalty shootout.
Now the focus shifts to group-stage matches against Argentina, Scotland, and Germany, where every result will be critical.
Volleyball Nations League Continues
The United States men's volleyball team continued building momentum with victories over Cuba, Iran, and Serbia before narrowly falling to Japan in a thrilling five-set match.
The women also continued their campaign after earning an impressive win over Serbia and now prepare for a difficult stretch against Thailand, Poland, Turkey, and Brazil.
Both teams remain in strong position as the tournament moves toward the Finals.
Beach Volleyball Heads to Switzerland
Beach volleyball takes center stage this week as the world's best pairs travel to Gstaad, Switzerland, for one of the premier stops on the Beach Pro Tour.
With Olympic medalists, world champions, and valuable ranking points on the line, the Elite16 event promises another exciting week of international competition.
Team USA Advances at the World Cup
The United States men's soccer team closed group play with a 3-2 loss to Turkey.
Despite the defeat, the Americans advanced to the Round of 32 and now prepare for a knockout match against Bosnia.
From this point forward, every match is win or go home.
Wimbledon Is Underway
The grass courts of Wimbledon are once again in the spotlight as the year's third Grand Slam begins.
The tournament features many of the sport's biggest names, including Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Świątek, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini, and defending champion Barbora Krejčíková.
Opening day delivered everything fans expect from Wimbledon, including long rallies, dramatic finishes, and early upsets.
Looking Ahead
The summer sports calendar is only getting busier.
Baseball races are heating up, volleyball enters a crucial stretch, the U.S. field hockey teams prepare for important international competitions, Wimbledon is just beginning, and the knockout stage of the World Cup is here.
With championships and playoff positioning on the line across multiple sports, the next few weeks promise plenty of unforgettable moments.
