Momentum Shifts: Big Wins, Tough Losses, and the Push Toward the Second Half

Kansas City Current Bounce Back in Style

After a disappointing 2-0 loss to Gotham in the NWSL Challenge Cup, the Kansas City Current responded exactly how a championship-caliber team should with a dominant performance. The Current bounced back with a convincing 3-0 victory over the Denver Summit, reminding everyone why they remain one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

The biggest difference was the energy and attacking pressure. Kansas City came out aggressive, controlled possession, and made sure the Summit were never comfortable. After being held scoreless against Gotham, the Current's offense found its rhythm again, putting together a complete performance on both sides of the ball.

Now, the Current enter one of the busiest stretches of their schedule. They hit the road to face the Orlando Pride before finally returning home, where they will host the San Diego Wave. After that, Kansas City travels to Boston to take on the Boston Legacy before closing out July at home against Racing Louisville.

This stretch will be a major test. The Current will have to balance travel, consistency, and staying healthy while facing several teams fighting for important points. Getting back home in front of their fans against San Diego should provide a huge boost as they look to build momentum heading deeper into the season.

St. Louis City SC Returns to MLS Action

After nearly two months away from MLS action, St. Louis City SC is finally ready to return to the field, and the timing could not be more exciting.

The return comes on July 16 when St. Louis hosts their biggest rivals, Sporting Kansas City. There is no better way to restart the season than with a rivalry match. The atmosphere should be electric as St. Louis gets back in front of its home fans and tries to make up for lost time.

Following the rivalry showdown, St. Louis hits the road to face the LA Galaxy before returning home to finish July against the Colorado Rapids.

With such a long break, the biggest challenge will be getting back into regular season play. Players will need to quickly find their rhythm again, but the excitement surrounding the team's return should bring plenty of energy. After waiting almost two months, fans finally get to see St. Louis City back in MLS action.

Indiana Pacers Prepare for NBA Summer League

The Indiana Pacers are getting ready for the NBA Las Vegas Summer League, one of the most exciting events of the NBA offseason.

Summer League gives young players, rookies, recent draft picks, and players fighting for roster spots a chance to compete against other NBA teams. While the games do not count toward the regular season standings, they are extremely important for player development.

Teams use Summer League to evaluate talent, test new players in real game situations, and see who might earn a bigger role moving forward. For fans, it is one of the first chances to see the newest additions to a team in action.

The Pacers will face Cleveland, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Minnesota during their Summer League schedule. While the focus will not be on wins and losses alone, strong performances could help young players earn opportunities when training camp begins. The Summer League spotlight is especially important for players trying to prove they belong at the NBA level.

Team USA Stays Perfect in FIBA World Cup Qualifying

The United States Men's National Basketball Team continued its journey toward the next FIBA World Cup with two thrilling victories, and both came down to the final moments.

The United States defeated the Dominican Republic 82-81 in a one-point battle. The game came down to execution under pressure, with the Americans making just enough plays late to escape with the win.

The team followed that performance with another nail-biter against one of its biggest rivals, Mexico. The United States defeated Mexico 94-93 in another one-point thriller.

Those victories completed a perfect first round of qualification. Dating back to 2025, the United States swept all of its qualification games, defeating Nicaragua, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic twice.

While these qualification games feature different rosters than the Olympic teams fans are used to seeing, they are still an important part of building depth and keeping the United States on track for another FIBA World Cup appearance.

Cardinals Search for Consistency Before the All-Star Break

After a frustrating series against the Miami Marlins, the St. Louis Cardinals showed signs of turning things around with a strong stretch against the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs.

The biggest difference was the Cardinals' ability to generate consistent offense while also getting more dependable performances from their pitching staff. While there are still areas that need improvement, St. Louis proved they can compete with quality teams when they play with confidence and aggression.

The Cardinals opened their series against Atlanta with a 5-3 victory, setting the tone early. St. Louis was able to create timely scoring opportunities and capitalize on mistakes, something that had been missing during their struggles against Miami. The offense did not need to rely on one big inning; instead, they produced throughout the game and received enough support from the pitching staff to hold onto the lead.

Game two showed some of the Cardinals' biggest challenges. St. Louis fell 5-1 as the Braves controlled the game from the beginning. The offense struggled to find rhythm, failing to bring runners home when opportunities presented themselves. Against strong teams, missed chances can quickly become the difference between a win and a loss, and this game highlighted the need for more consistency at the plate.

The Cardinals responded exactly how they needed to in the series finale, exploding for an 11-5 win. The offense came alive with pressure throughout the lineup, showing what this team can do when hitters are aggressive and able to string together quality at-bats. The victory was especially important because it showed the Cardinals could bounce back after a disappointing loss instead of allowing momentum to disappear.

St. Louis carried that confidence into a rivalry matchup with the Chicago Cubs and delivered one of its most impressive performances of the season. The Cardinals dominated the Cubs in a historic 17-1 run-rule victory, combining explosive offense with excellent pitching. The offense attacked early and often, putting constant pressure on Chicago's pitching staff and never allowing the Cubs a chance to settle into the game. Defensively, the Cardinals played clean baseball, which allowed their pitching to work with a comfortable lead.

The Cardinals followed that performance with another statement win, shutting out the Cubs 3-0. The pitching staff controlled the game, limiting opportunities and keeping Chicago's hitters off balance. Winning in different ways—through power offense in one game and dominant pitching in another—is exactly what playoff-caliber teams need to do.

Chicago avoided the sweep in the final game of the series with a 6-4 victory, but the Cardinals still walked away from the rivalry matchup with significant momentum. The loss showed that while the offense has the ability to carry the team, the Cardinals cannot afford to let opponents build early leads. Against teams with strong lineups, falling behind can quickly put too much pressure on the offense to respond.

That momentum was tested immediately as St. Louis entered a five-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Unfortunately, the Cardinals have struggled to maintain the same success, dropping the first three games of the series.

The first two losses came by identical 4-3 scores, showing just how close the games were. St. Louis had opportunities but could not consistently deliver the key hit or make the big defensive play needed to finish games.

The third game was much more one-sided, with the Brewers pulling away for a 10-2 victory.

The Brewers series has highlighted the biggest areas the Cardinals need to improve moving forward. The offense must find more consistency, especially in high-pressure situations with runners on base. The pitching staff has shown the ability to dominate, but minimizing mistakes and avoiding big innings from opponents will be crucial. Against teams fighting for playoff positions, small mistakes often become the deciding factor.

The Cardinals will look to finish the Brewers series strong before turning their attention to the Atlanta Braves and the upcoming All-Star break.

The second half of the season will provide no shortage of challenges, beginning with a road trip to face the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels. St. Louis will then return home to complete a postponed game against Arizona before hosting the Cincinnati Reds. The end of July will bring another major test when the Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs for a rare four-game rivalry series before traveling to Canada to face the Toronto Blue Jays, the 2025 World Series runners-up.

Every series will carry increased importance as the Cardinals continue their pursuit of a postseason spot. For St. Louis to make a serious push in the second half, the formula is clear: continue getting strong starting pitching, create more consistent offensive production, and find ways to win close games. The Cardinals have already shown they can compete with some of the best teams in baseball. Now they must prove they can sustain that level of play when every game matters.

Americans Shine on the Beach Volleyball World Stage

The 2026 Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event in Gstaad, Switzerland, delivered another exciting week of world-class beach volleyball.

With some of the best teams in the world competing on one of the sport's biggest stages, the tournament featured dramatic finishes, breakthrough performances, and a strong showing from the United States.

On the men's side, the Netherlands' Stefan Boermans and Alexander Brouwer claimed the championship, earning their first Elite16 gold medal as a partnership.

The United States had a major presence in the men's final, as Trevor Crabb and Chase Budinger finished with the silver medal.

The women's tournament belonged to the United States, as Kristen Cruz and Taryn Brasher captured the gold medal after defeating fellow Americans Kelly Cheng and Megan Kraft in an all-American final.

The victory marked another major achievement for Cruz and Brasher, who continued their incredible run in Gstaad by winning the tournament for the third consecutive time.

The United States left Gstaad with plenty to be proud of. American teams reached both championship matches, collecting a gold medal on the women's side and a silver medal on the men's side.

U.S. Men's Soccer World Cup Run Ends, But the Belief Remains

This one is going to hurt for a long time.

The United States Men's National Team saw its World Cup run end with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16. The U.S. did not play its best match. After conceding early, the Americans fought back to tie the game, only to give up another goal just one minute later. You cannot play that way in a World Cup knockout match and expect to win. Belgium took advantage and finished the job.

Even with the heartbreaking ending, this team gave the country something special. Fans showed up, even without tickets. Watch parties happened across the country. The belief was everywhere.

The motto became, "Why not us?"

U.S. Soccer captured the feeling perfectly: "We believed. So did you."

Simple words, but incredibly powerful. This team brought people together, and there is still so much to be proud of.
