Built to Compete: SIUE Women’s Soccer Enters 2026 With Championship Expectations
A New Season, A Clean Slate
A new season brings a clean slate, new challenges and another opportunity for the SIUE women’s soccer program to compete for championships.
For head coach Derek Burton, the 2026 season is about more than simply getting off to a fast start. It is about seeing the work put in during the offseason translate onto the field, building confidence at home and continuing the development of a young team that Burton believes has plenty of potential.
The Cougars opened the season on the road at Alabama A&M, presenting an early test away from Korte Stadium. While starting a season with a victory is always the goal, Burton emphasized that the bigger picture matters as well.
“It’s always a goal to start strong when you begin a new season,” Burton said. “But it’s never the end of the world if you don’t get a win.”
For SIUE, the focus was on more than the result. Burton wanted to see the areas the team had emphasized during the offseason show up in its performance.
“The most important aspect is playing well and seeing the aspects of the game that we have been focusing on show in our performance,” he said.
The Cougars were delighted to accomplish both goals, earning a road victory in a challenging environment.
Establishing Confidence at Home
After beginning the season away from home, SIUE had an opportunity to settle into a rhythm with three consecutive home games against Valparaiso, Austin Peay and IU Indy.
For Burton, the stretch offered more than simply three games on the schedule. It provided an opportunity for the Cougars to become comfortable playing at Korte Stadium and establish an identity on their home field.
“It allowed us a time to really be comfortable at home, playing games before schools started and to set the tone for opponents when they come to Korte Stadium,” Burton said.
The goal is for SIUE to feel confident protecting its home turf, while making Korte Stadium a difficult place for opponents to play.
That home-field confidence could become particularly valuable as the season progresses and the Cougars turn their attention toward Ohio Valley Conference play.
A Regional Rivalry
The nonconference schedule also includes a matchup with SIU Carbondale, giving SIUE another opportunity to face a regional opponent while adding some extra significance to the game.
Burton sees the matchup as a fun rivalry between two schools within the same university system.
“It’s a fun rivalry, to play our university system sister school,” he said. “It gives the game a little bit more incentive, some added meaning for sure.”
Those regional matchups can bring an added level of excitement, both for the players and the fans, making the contest another highlight of the nonconference portion of the schedule.
Preparing for the Demands of the Season
College soccer demands consistency. With a long season, a demanding schedule and the physical toll of playing at a high level, preparation away from the field can be just as important as what happens during games.
SIUE has relied on its Athletic Performance program as the foundation of its physical preparation.
“Our overall Athletic Performance program is the basis of all of our physical preparation,” Burton said.
Burton specifically credited Mark Jamison and the Athletic Performance staff for developing a year-round approach designed to prepare the players for the demands of the season.
That preparation will be especially important as the Cougars navigate the latter stages of the schedule, when staying healthy and maintaining confidence can make a significant difference.
Speed, Development and an Evolving Attack
One of the areas Burton has been particularly encouraged by is SIUE’s attacking group.
The Cougars have added new players while also seeing continued development from their younger returners, giving the attack an opportunity to take another step forward.
“Our attacking group of players has elevated with the addition of new players and the development of our current young players continuing to grow,” Burton said.
That development could make SIUE a difficult team to defend.
Burton believes team speed will be one of the Cougars’ biggest weapons in 2026, particularly when they get into attacking situations.
“I think our team speed is something that opponents will note, so the attacking problems we can cause are my first thought,” he said.
SIUE also has another potential weapon when it earns set-piece opportunities. Burton pointed to the team’s free-kick and corner-kick takers as players capable of creating danger from restarts.
“Also, we have some very good free kick and restart takers that will allow us to be dangerous on any free kicks and corner kicks,” Burton said.
That combination of speed in the attack and quality on set pieces could give the Cougars multiple ways to create chances.
The OVC Race
Eventually, the focus turns to Ohio Valley Conference play, where familiarity between opponents can make every game particularly competitive.
The teams know one another well, and the battle for positioning can be decided by small margins. According to Burton, two factors could play a major role in determining which teams are best positioned to compete for the top of the standings: health and confidence.
“First of all, health and confidence,” Burton said.
By the time conference play arrives, Burton expects the teams with the majority of their most impactful players healthy and confident to have an advantage in what he described as a tight battle for positioning.
Ultimately, the goal is to put SIUE in position to compete for both the OVC regular-season championship and the tournament title.
How the Program Has Evolved
Burton has been at SIUE long enough to see the program evolve considerably. Asked what is different about the Cougars compared with when he first took over, his answer was simple.
“Everything really.”
Burton pointed to changes throughout the program, including staffing, budget, player profiles and, perhaps most importantly, expectations.
The expectation is now to challenge for OVC regular-season and tournament championships.
“The in depth answer to this could be its own story!” Burton said. “But the summarized answer is everything really. From staffing, to budget, to player profiles and certainly the expectation of challenging for the OVC regular season and tournament titles.”
That evolution provides important context for the 2026 season. SIUE is not simply looking to improve—it is entering the season with championship aspirations.
Energy, Chemistry and Championship Expectations
If there is one thing Burton wants SIUE fans to notice when they watch the Cougars this season, it is the energy within the group.
“This is a team that has great energy and comradery for one another,” Burton said. “They genuinely support and push one another every day.”
That chemistry could be particularly important for a young team.
Burton emphasized that this is a young group overall, but one that is committed to improving and building on the strengths it already possesses.
The combination of youth, speed, developing attackers, set-piece quality and strong team chemistry gives SIUE plenty to build around.
For the Cougars, the 2026 season is another opportunity to show how far the program has come—and how much further it can go.
With a team that Burton believes genuinely supports one another, a dangerous attacking group and championship expectations firmly in place, SIUE enters the season ready for another run at the top of the OVC.
