The Bronze Boot is back in Edwardsville
SIUE men’s soccer defeated rival Saint Louis University 1-0 in this year’s Bronze Boot match, reclaiming the Joseph Carenza Sr. Trophy and giving Cougar fans plenty to celebrate.
The game had everything you would expect from one of college soccer’s most historic rivalries: a crucial goal, strong goalkeeping, plenty of intensity, a dramatic finish, and one moment involving a trash can that may have been one of the funniest moments of the entire night.
Watching from home on ESPN+, it was clear that this was much more than an ordinary soccer game.
The intensity was there from the beginning, and by the final seconds, the outcome was still hanging in the balance.
A Rivalry Built on History
The rivalry between SIUE and Saint Louis dates back to 1969, with the first official Bronze Boot game taking place in 1971.
The winner of the annual matchup takes home the Joseph Carenza Sr. Trophy, better known as the Bronze Boot. Over the years, the game has become one of the most recognizable rivalries in college soccer.
The history of the event is remarkable.
From 1972 through 1986, many of the Bronze Boot games were played at Busch Stadium II in downtown St. Louis. The rivalry regularly attracted massive crowds, including an incredible 22,512 fans for a 1980 matchup between SIUE and Saint Louis. That game stood as the largest-attended NCAA soccer match for decades.
That history is part of what makes the Bronze Boot different.
This isn’t simply SIUE and Saint Louis playing another game on the schedule. There is a trophy on the line, decades of history behind the matchup, and plenty of pride at stake for two programs located just a short distance from one another.
The Bronze Boot Returns Home
This year’s game was particularly special because the Bronze Boot returned to Edwardsville.
After recent editions of the rivalry were played away from SIUE’s campus, including at CITYPARK and at Saint Louis, the 2026 matchup brought the event back to Bob Guelker Field at Korte Stadium.
A crowd of 1,947 attended SIUE’s home opener to watch the Cougars take on their biggest rival.
For SIUE, there could not have been a much better way to welcome the Bronze Boot back home.
One Goal Makes the Difference
The deciding moment came in the first half.
In the 36th minute, Ryley Gibbs scored the only goal of the game, finishing a pass from Daniel Murray to give SIUE a 1-0 lead. The Cougars took that advantage into halftime and never gave it up.
It was a huge moment in a game where goals were always going to be difficult to come by.
Saint Louis continued to push throughout the match, finishing with nine shots and five shots on goal. SIUE had seven shots, with three on target.
The statistics showed just how competitive the game was, but SIUE made its most important opportunity count.
Once the Cougars had the lead, the pressure shifted to the defense.
Saint Louis was searching for an equalizer, but goalkeeper Ioannis Koupepides was there when SIUE needed him most. He made five saves and earned his first shutout as a Cougar.
Every save became more important as the clock continued to wind down.
Down to the Final Seconds
Then came the final moments.
Saint Louis nearly produced one of the most dramatic endings imaginable.
Just after the final whistle, a cross came into the box and was headed into the net. For a moment, it appeared the Billikens had found an equalizer at the very last second.
But there was one major problem.
The clock had already hit zero.
The play went to review, and it was confirmed that the ball entered the net after time had expired. No goal was awarded.
SIUE had survived.
The Cougars held on for the 1-0 victory and reclaimed the Bronze Boot.
It was a fittingly dramatic ending for a rivalry game that had been intense from start to finish.
And Then There Was the Trash Can
Of course, one of the most memorable moments of the night had absolutely nothing to do with a goal.
With roughly a minute or two remaining in the game, the ball went out of play and somehow bounced directly into a trash can.
Yes, a trash can.
The crowd’s reaction made the moment even better. Fans clapped and let out an impressed “oooh,” apparently amazed that the ball had landed so perfectly.
Even watching the game from home on ESPN+, the reaction was impossible to miss.
Joe Pott, who was doing play-by-play on the broadcast, also reacted to the moment, helping capture just how unexpected—and honestly impressive—it was.
For a few seconds, in the middle of an intense Bronze Boot match with the clock winding down, a trash can became one of the stars of the game.
Sometimes sports give us moments that nobody could possibly plan.
This was definitely one of them.
The Boot Is Back
When the final review was complete and the late Saint Louis goal was officially disallowed, SIUE had its victory.
The Cougars defeated Saint Louis 1-0, earning possession of the Joseph Carenza Sr. Trophy for the third time in four years. According to SIUE Athletics, it is the program’s best stretch in the rivalry since winning three straight meetings in 1978 and 1979.
For SIUE, the win was about more than just the final score.
It was about bringing one of college soccer’s most historic rivalries back to Edwardsville and giving Cougar fans a memorable night in the process.
There was history.
There was intensity.
There was a game-winning goal.
There was a dramatic review at the final whistle.
And somehow, there was even a soccer ball landing perfectly in a trash can.
That is what made this year’s Bronze Boot match so memorable.
The Bronze Boot is back in Edwardsville—and SIUE made sure its return was one to remember.
