A Look Across the Sports World: Big Wins, Tough Losses, and Momentum Shifts

Barcelona

Barcelona closed out another outstanding season in style, picking up victories over Real Sociedad and Madrid CFF to finish their campaign on a high note. The 2-1 win over Real Sociedad was especially emotional because it marked the final Barcelona appearance of club legend Alexia Putellas. In fitting fashion, she recorded an assist in her farewell match, setting up Aitana Bonmatí as Barcelona secured the victory. Clàudia Pina also found the net as the team gave their captain the sendoff she deserved. The following match against Madrid CFF ended in a dominant 4-0 victory, putting an exclamation point on another successful season. While the results were important, the biggest story was Alexia’s departure. After 14 years with the club, more than 500 appearances, over 200 goals, multiple Champions League titles, and two Ballon d’Or awards, she leaves as one of the greatest players in Barcelona history and one of the most influential figures women’s soccer has ever seen. Her impact on the club and the sport extends far beyond statistics, and Barcelona supporters will feel her absence for years to come.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals experienced a little bit of everything over the past two weeks. Things started poorly against Milwaukee, as St. Louis dropped the final two games of the series 6-0 and 2-1, completing a frustrating sweep. Fortunately, they responded against their biggest rivals. The Cardinals took two of three from the Cubs, winning the opener 6-5 before bouncing back from a 6-1 loss with a convincing 5-1 victory in the rubber game. The Rangers series looked like it might be another disappointment after losses of 2-1 and 7-4, but St. Louis avoided the sweep with a 5-3 win in the finale. Then came the turnaround. The Cardinals swept the Reds, winning 10-3, 6-5, and 5-3. The opener was fueled by a six-run sixth inning, with Alec Burleson continuing his hot streak and Jordan Walker contributing multiple hits. The offense showed the depth and resilience that fans have been waiting to see. That momentum carried into New York, where the Cardinals opened their series against the Mets with a dominant 7-0 victory. Dustin May delivered six strong innings, Alec Burleson continued to drive in runs, and the offense erupted early to secure the shutout win. The Cardinals still have two games remaining against the Mets before heading to Minnesota to face the Twins. After that, they’ll return home for a series against the Padres, travel to Kansas City to take on the Royals, then host the Diamondbacks and Marlins.

United States at the World Championships

The United States entered the World Championships with hopes of making another deep run, but things didn’t end the way they wanted. The Americans handled Austria 4-1 to advance to the quarterfinals, setting up a highly anticipated showdown with Canada. Unfortunately, that is where the tournament came to an end. Canada earned a 4-0 victory, eliminating the United States and ending their championship hopes. The result was particularly surprising considering the Americans had defeated Canada in the Olympic gold medal game earlier this year. Expectations were high, but international hockey can be unpredictable, and this time Canada got its revenge.

USWNT

The USWNT traveled to Brazil for a pair of matches that also served as an early look at the country that will host the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The first match didn’t go the Americans’ way, as Brazil claimed a 2-1 victory. However, the United States responded in the second game with a hard-fought 1-0 win. The lone goal came when a Sophia Wilson effort was deflected into the net, and the match became memorable for reasons beyond the scoreline, as Brazil finished with multiple red cards during a chaotic ending. Splitting a difficult road trip against one of the world’s top teams is a solid result and provides valuable experience as preparations continue for future international competitions.

USMNT

The USMNT wrapped up its World Cup preparations with two intriguing matches. First came a thrilling 3-2 win over Senegal, a result that gave supporters plenty of reasons for optimism heading into the tournament. The attack showed creativity and confidence, while the team demonstrated resilience in a high-energy contest. Their final tune-up came against Germany, one of the most successful soccer nations in history and a four-time World Cup champion. The United States competed well but ultimately fell 2-1. Antonee Robinson scored for the Americans, and despite the defeat, there were encouraging signs heading into the World Cup. Now the real challenge begins.

Kansas City Current

The Kansas City Current headed into the international break on a positive note, earning a 1-0 victory over the Boston Legacy. Wins like these can be easy to overlook during a long season, but grinding out three points before a break can be huge when playoff positions are determined later in the year. Kansas City continues to show why it remains one of the teams to watch in the NWSL.

Athletes Unlimited Softball League

One of the most exciting developments in women’s sports this summer is the launch of the new-look Athletes Unlimited Softball League. Unlike last season, where teams traveled together and played in rotating locations, franchises now have true home markets. Teams are based in cities and regions across the country, creating stronger local identities and fan bases. For Oklahoma City Spark fans, the start could not have gone much better. The Spark, formerly an independent team before joining the AUSL, opened their new chapter with a 13-5 victory over the Texas Volts. It was an explosive offensive performance and an exciting introduction to what should be a fascinating inaugural season under the new format.

United States Volleyball

Both United States national volleyball teams began their Volleyball Nations League campaigns over the past two weeks. The American women opened with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Ukraine. Then came one of the biggest surprises of the opening week, a 3-0 loss to Canada. Rather than letting that setback define them, the United States bounced back immediately. They survived a tough five-set battle against France before finishing the week with another impressive sweep, defeating Germany 3-0. A 3-1 record is a strong foundation, especially considering the team’s ability to recover from an unexpected loss. The American men also started their VNL campaign successfully, defeating Türkiye 3-1. It’s only the beginning of a long international season, but opening with a win is always the preferred way to start.
