2 week recap-STL City,STL Cardinals,&The Women’s Champions League
Barcelona just continues to feel inevitable at this point. The Women’s Champions League semifinal against Bayern Munich showed exactly why they’re still the standard in Europe. The 1-1 draw in the first leg kept things tense, but the second leg was the Barcelona we’re used to seeing: a 4-2 attacking showcase with wave after wave of pressure. Players like Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas completely controlled the midfield, and once Barcelona started moving the ball quickly, Bayern just couldn’t slow them down. Now they head into another Women’s Champions League final against Lyonnais, which honestly feels like the defining rivalry of this era in women’s soccer. Barcelona also stayed sharp domestically with a dominant 5-0 win over Levante and a 3-1 road win against Tenerife. Even with all the pressure and expectations around this team, they still make huge matches look controlled.
The men’s side keeps finding ways to answer every challenge in La Liga. Road wins over Getafe and Osasuna were important because those are exactly the kinds of matches title contenders slip up in late in the season. The biggest moment was El Clásico against Real Madrid. Barcelona winning 2-0 at home in a title-deciding Clásico was massive, especially considering it was the first El Clásico directly deciding La Liga since 1932. That atmosphere had to be unbelievable. Players like Lamine Yamal continue to look fearless in huge moments, while the midfield control from Pedri helped Barcelona dictate the pace for long stretches. Winning the league against your biggest rival always means more, but doing it in a match with that kind of historical significance makes it even bigger.
Manchester City still feels like one of the strangest teams to watch this season because they can look dominant one week and completely chaotic the next. The 2-1 win over Southampton to reach the FA Cup final was huge because it kept their hopes for silverware alive, but then came that wild 3-3 draw with Everton where City’s defense looked completely exposed at times. The response against Brentford was much more convincing with a 3-0 win that looked closer to the City people are used to seeing.
The women’s side had a huge emotional swing too. Losing 3-2 to Brighton could have completely changed the title race, but bouncing back with a 1-0 win over Liverpool ended up clinching the Women’s Super League title and finally ending Chelsea’s six-year run. That’s a huge accomplishment considering how dominant Chelsea has been. Then beating Chelsea 3-2 in extra time in the Women’s FA Cup semifinal made it even more amazing. Those are the kinds of matches that can define a season.
St. Louis City continues to be one of the hardest teams to predict. The 3-2 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes felt frustrating because defensive mistakes continue to hurt them, but the 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 was a big moment for the club. Cup matches always feel different, and advancing gave them something positive to build on. The inconsistency showed up again in the 2-0 loss to Austin, but then they answered with a tough 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids. When St. Louis defends with energy and stays compact, they can absolutely compete. The problem has just been sustaining that level from match to match.
The Kansas City Current had one of those reality-check losses against Washington Spirit, falling 4-0 in a game where almost nothing went right. But really good teams respond, and Kansas City did exactly that with wins over the North Carolina Courage and the Chicago Stars. The 3-0 win over Chicago especially felt important because it looked much more like the attacking Current team people expect. Temwa Chawinga continues to be one of the most dangerous forwards in the league because once she gets space, defenders are usually chasing the game.
The St. Louis Cardinals had a rough start to this stretch getting swept by the Seattle Mariners. Losing two separate 3-2 games always stings because you feel like one swing changes the entire series, and the 11-9 loss showed how badly the pitching staff struggled to close innings. But the response against the Pittsburgh Pirates was exactly what they needed. Sweeping a four-game series with wins of 4-2, 11-7, 5-4, and 10-5 gave the offense confidence again. The lineup finally started stepping up with runners on base consistently. Taking a series against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers was another huge statement. Winning 7-2 and then 3-2 showed two completely different styles of victory. One was powered by offense, while the other was about pitching and late-game execution. The split series against both the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres kind of sums up the Cardinals right now. There are stretches where they look dangerous, especially in the 6-0 shutout over San Diego, but there are still games where they leave opportunities on the table.
The United States men's hockey team opened this stretch with a strong 5-2 win over Germany in a friendly before heading into the Men’s World Championships. The offense looked sharp, and getting confidence before a major international tournament always matters. Now the attention shifts to the next seven games on the world stage.
Finally, the Indiana Fever officially opened the WNBA season after a really entertaining preseason stretch. The 109-91 win over the New York Liberty turned heads immediately because the offense looked explosive, while the 105-57 blowout over the Nigeria women’s national team showed how quickly this group can pile up points in transition. The season opener against the Dallas Wings ended in a frustrating 107-104 loss, but losing by only three in a game with that much scoring still showed promise. Caitlin Clark continues to completely change the energy around the Fever. Even in losses, the pace, attention, and offensive confidence around this team feels different than it has in years.
