Thank you, Messi.
Sometimes those three words say more than a list of records ever could.
Lionel Messi could change a game with a pass, a dribble or a finish. His technical ability, vision and creativity made him one of the most recognizable players in the world. But watching his journey with Argentina meant following something more than extraordinary talent. It meant following a player through disappointment, enormous expectations and the determination to keep trying.
Now that his international career has ended, that is the part of his story I keep coming back to.
The Heartbreak Before the Celebration
Messi became a superstar at Barcelona, where he scored 672 goals and helped the club win 10 Spanish league titles and four Champions League trophies. Yet success with Argentina remained difficult to reach.
There were painful losses in major finals, including the 2014 World Cup against Germany and consecutive Copa América finals against Chile in 2015 and 2016.
After the 2016 defeat, Messi announced that he was leaving international soccer. For a moment, it seemed his Argentina story might end with disappointment.
But he returned.
That decision matters when we look back at everything that followed. The celebrations did not come easily. Before Messi lifted the trophies, he had to decide to keep representing his country despite the criticism and heartbreak.
Finally Reaching the Top
Argentina’s 2021 Copa América victory gave Messi his first major senior international championship. Ángel Di María scored the winning goal against Brazil, and Messi finally had the opportunity to celebrate that breakthrough with his teammates.
Then came Qatar in 2022.
Argentina began its World Cup campaign with a shocking loss to Saudi Arabia. It was hardly the start a team dreaming of a championship wanted. But Argentina responded and eventually reached the final against France.
What followed was a match soccer fans will remember for years.
Argentina lost a two-goal lead. Messi scored in extra time. Kylian Mbappé completed his hat trick. The championship came down to penalties.
When Argentina won the shootout, Messi finally had the trophy that had been missing from his career.
After everything he had experienced with the national team, he was a World Cup champion.
Argentina added another Copa América title in 2024. Messi had to leave that final injured, but his teammates finished the job against Colombia. It was another reminder that even a team with one of the greatest players in history needs everyone.
One Last Goodbye
Messi’s final World Cup ended with Argentina finishing runner-up to Spain in 2026. Even the greatest careers do not provide a perfect ending to every chapter.
His farewell appearance for Argentina came against Benin in Buenos Aires on October 6. Argentina won 3–0, and Messi contributed a goal and two assists.
But the significance of that night went beyond the score.
It was an opportunity for supporters to thank the player who had carried their hopes, shared their disappointments and helped deliver some of their happiest soccer memories.
There is something emotional about knowing that a familiar sight has become a final one. Argentina’s number 10 walking onto the field had been part of international soccer for more than two decades. Now, that chapter has closed.
What I Will Remember
There will always be debates about the greatest soccer player of all time. Fans will compare trophies, goals, records and different generations.
What stands out to me about Messi is the combination of his ability and his persistence.
He could create something extraordinary in an instant, but he could not avoid disappointment. He lost finals. He faced criticism. He briefly walked away. Then he returned and kept competing.
His journey with Argentina reminds us that even exceptional talent does not make success immediate or guaranteed.
Messi’s club career has given fans memories at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami. His international career gave us the story of a player who kept coming back until he could lift the World Cup for his country.
That is a story worth remembering.
Thank you, Messi, for the goals, the creativity and the unforgettable moments.
And thank you for showing us what it can mean to keep going when the ending you hoped for has not arrived yet.
